The oil leak is coming from the engine. That's about all anyone can say without seeing the car.
Also, without knowing what's leaking, no one will be able to tell you what it will cost.
Anywhere from $20 up to $2,000.

If you do the work yourself there is no such thing as an expensive oil leak. You need to get some more information, is it coming from the top of the engine or the bottom? The left or the right? The front or the back?

Common places for leaks:
Valve Covers - Real easy fix.
Front / Rear main seal - Real difficult fix, more time consuming than hard.
Oil pan gasket - Somewhat easy fix, the hardest part is getting the sealing surfaces free of oil.
Oil cooler / remote oil filter lines - Take the old line off and put the new one on. That's it.

Some things to remember about replacing a gasket - when you take the old gasket off, there may be burnt oil around where the gasket was. You will need a PLASTIC gasket scraper to remove this. Be patient and thorough. Also, oil cannot cross a gasket or it will not seal. The surfaces must be absolutely dry upon reassembly. When torquing down, tighten in a star pattern 1/4 torque, then half torque, then 3/4 torque, then full torque, then check three times. DO NOT torque down one bolt all at once before the others of you will warp the sealing surfaces.

A car will last as long as you maintain it. If you love your car, it's worth it IMO. Good luck, happy driving and I hope you enter the world of DIY auto maintenance.

Hope this helps.

Thomas

it depends where the oil is leaking from. the simpler fixes is if it's from the oil drain plug gasket, or oil filter. in that case, just buy another oil filter and tighten it right this time, $10. if it's the drain plug, then that's another easy fix, $0.25. if it's the oil pan gasket, then it's more costly. if it's the head gasket then it's even more.
