I'm located in the state of Hawaii where Acura and Toyota have monopolies. We have a Pflueger Acura here who has quoted me $38,000 on a brand new 2009 Acura RDX initially. After I said no, they dropped it down to $35,500. The MSRP is less than $34,000. All sources online tell people to shoot for invoice price if not below invoice pricing. However, those sources assume that there is more than one dealer in the area selling that particular car. What would be the best method to negotiate in this situation?

Would it be at all feasible to have a friend purchase it in California for a very good price and then have it shipped to Hawaii? Would my friend have to purchase car insurance just to drive it from the dealership to the dock? Would I need to register for California plates first and then for Hawaii plates? Would all these costs and troubles take away from the money I would save by purchasing my car outside of my state?

Yes it will be feasible to do that. But you'll have to pay the taxes and all.So calculate the money in both the way and than decide.
